Spain

For the first time, an edition of the Men’s Handball World Championship will take place in Spain. For this reason, Valero Rivera’s side have a great opportunity to do something big in front of their crowd. The Spanish national team comes to this tournament with a well-drilled unit, in which every player knows each other since years ago and with its key players in a perfect maturity state. Third in the last World Championship, held in Sweden on 2011, it is time for Spain to take a step forward and, maybe, become World champions in front of their own fans.

Key players

Julen Aguinagalde

Julen Aguinagalde

The Basque pivot is the key player of the Spanish offensive game. 30-year-old Aginagalde is enjoying the best moment in his sporting career so far, considered by the press as the best line player in the world. In fact, Julen is one of the five nominees by the IHF to become Best Player of 2012.

Arpad Sterbik

Arpad Sterbik

The Serbian-born goalkeeper is considered as one of the best between the sticks. Hombrados’ injury will increase his responsibility, although after three years with the Spanish jersey, Arpad has shown that the home team’s goal is in the very best hands. His height (2 meters) and arm span make of him a wall for his opponents.

Viran Morros

Viran Morros

FC Barcelona’s player is one of the best men of Valero Rivera’s defensive system. The Catalan left back barely plays in attack, but his great arm spam and ability to anticipate make of him one of the best defenders in modern handball. Viran is a real expert in blocking the ball, which allows many fast breaks that he usually scores effectively.

Alberto Entrerríos

Alberto Entrerríos

The 36-year-old Asturian left back returns to the Spanish national team after his absence during the last Olympic Games, and he do it as the captain. Due to Jose Javier Hombrados’ injury, Entrerrios’ elder brother will be the most veteran player of the team in a tournament in which he must lead the group on and off the court. His 683 goals in 228 international games make of him a live legend of Spanish handball.
